I have struggled with my past for many years. And honestly, the more I learn and grow closer to Jesus, the more I struggle with my past. As I grow closer to the Lord and He changes me, I realize how many mistakes I have really made. So, I’m having to pray through them and truly give them to God. He is the source of forgiveness and if He forgives me, then why shouldn’t I forgive myself. Why should I let what others think of me control how I think of myself? The only one whose thoughts matter is Jesus.
In order to change my thoughts about myself and my mistakes, I have to consistently and fervently pray.
How to Get Over Past Mistakes that are dragging you down.
What mistakes are weighing on you? Like truly wearing you down. Write them down on paper or in a prayer journal. Something powerful happens when you write your thoughts and prayers down. Once you’ve written them down, commit some time to pray over these mistakes and pray for you to let these things go. Pray for God to give you the power to overcome these things.
Here are some steps you can take:
- Acknowledge your mistakes (write them down)
- Ask God for forgiveness (and for you to forgive yourself)
- Turn from your behaviors that are causing you to make mistakes
- Allow God to heal you (He can overcome all past mistakes)
- This can look like going to counseling and getting professional help with any struggles, asking someone you’ve hurt for forgiveness, or even forgiving someone else
Just remember that this is a process and God will change you over time if you seek Him and allow Him to grow you. You may fail and feel like some things are impossible to forgive but we serve a powerful God.
