When facing a storm, sometimes it can ignite lots of anxiety in the uncertainty. Instead of panicking, we should learn to pray. Going to God in prayer for safety from storm first can help any situation, especially one full of anxiety. Download my free guide to learn how to pray to help you get started.
Back story..
I grew up in Southeast Texas, so naturally, we had lots of hurricanes over the years. I can remember always being so anxious all hurricane season as a kid. When evacuating I never knew if we would return to stuff or if we’d have a home when we returned. Thankfully, throughout my childhood, we always returned to a home.
One storm was particularly brutal. My freshman year of high school a hurricane developed rather quickly. It was projected to be a tropical storm and not be very powerful, but man, it strengthened quickly. We stayed to ride out the storm, and it is an experience that I will never forget. Through the storm, I seriously thought my mom and I were going to die. We hid in the closet covering ourselves with pillows and blankets as the storm shook the house and lifted it up and down on the blocks the raised house was on. But, during the eye of the storm, we had a break in the chaos and it was eerily calm. We knew that we’d soon have to brave the second half of the storm. We enjoyed the peace and then hunkered down for the second half.
Once it was over I vowed to never ride out another hurricane. I was one and done. I never wish that experience on anyone.
Fast forward to adulthood..
I was pregnant with my first son and a winter storm hit Southeast Texas. I definitely didn’t see that coming, nor did anyone else. To top that off, I had just found out I had gestational diabetes and was on a strict diet during this storm. During the storm, so much snow and ice covered things that we lost power in our area. This led to me not being able to take care of myself properly and cook healthy food. I basically could only eat junk that didn’t have to be refrigerated or cooked. I can remember feeling so sick because I could only eat things that made my sugar spike and make me feel like I would pass out. It was brutal.
Fast forward again..
So I finally got to a season in my adulthood where I stopped worrying about so much and started praying. And, man, it changed my life. Instead of panicking, pray. Now, when troubles arise, I pray. When I feel nervous, I pray. When storms come (literally), I pray.
Here’s what to pray for:
- Ask God to keep you & loved ones safe
- Ask God to give you wisdom on what to do to prepare
- Ask God to give you peace that can only come from Him
