I spent many years fumbling through prayers. Like, really struggling. When I was in college, I was in a prayer group where we went in a circle and prayed for the person next to us out loud. Man, I was always nervous, unconfident, and clueless on how to pray. I hated that feeling of not knowing what to say or even how to structure a proper prayer. I remember hearing the other girls pray sweet, eloquent prayers and then having to follow them up with fumbled prayers. Yikes, it was not fun.
Over the years, I’ve since learned that I can’t compare myself to others, especially in my walk with the Lord. I have searched for ways to pray and learned to follow a simple structure. I’ve also learned that when I don’t know what to say or what to pray, pray scripture. When I spend time in God’s word, I learn scripture and become equipped to pray His word.
Switch Gears
Do you want to start praying scripture, too? Ask God to give you the desire to pray. Also ask God to speak to you and give you guidance on what scriptures to focus on. He will give you guidance on what to pray over your life and over other people’s lives. When in doubt pray it out!
Simple Steps for Praying Scripture:
- Pray with a thankful heart and start by thanking God for who He is and what He’s done.
- Read your bible.
- Pray for God to speak to you as your read.
- Pray for God to help you memorize scripture.
- Have verses available or memorized to pray.
When you practice these simple steps, praying will get easier in time. The more you practice and let God guide you, the better you will become. Before you know it, God will grow you into a prayer expert!
