What Jesus Meant by Fishers of Men and How We Can Live It Out Today
When Jesus called His first disciples, He used a simple but powerful phrase that continues to inspire believers today: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men” (Matthew 4:19, NKJV). This statement, found in the Gospels, reveals both the mission and the heart of discipleship. But what exactly does it mean to be a fisher of men? And how can we live out this calling in our daily lives?
In this post, we’ll explore the biblical meaning of being fishers of men, examine scriptures where Jesus gave this calling, and look at practical ways we can apply this in our modern world.

The Biblical Call to Be Fishers of Men
The phrase comes directly from Jesus’ words to Simon Peter and Andrew:
- “Then He said to them, ‘Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.’ They immediately left their nets and followed Him.” (Matthew 4:19–20, NKJV)
A similar account is found in Mark 1:17–18. These brothers were fishermen by trade. They understood the hard work, patience, and skill required to catch fish. Jesus took their everyday occupation and turned it into a spiritual metaphor: instead of catching fish, they would now be part of God’s mission to bring people into the Kingdom.
This call was not only for Peter and Andrew but for all who choose to follow Christ. Jesus calls every believer to share the gospel and draw others to Him. This leads us to the Great Commission, to spread the hope of Jesus to all nations.
What Does It Mean to Be a Fisher of Men?
To be a fisher of men means actively participating in the work of evangelism—inviting others to know Jesus Christ, nurturing them in faith, developing them as disciples and helping them experience the love of God. Just as fishermen use nets, patience, and skill to catch fish, Christians are called to use prayer, scripture, and Christ-like love to reach people’s hearts.
Here are three key aspects of this calling:
- Obedience to Christ’s Mission
Being a fisher of men starts with obedience. The disciples “immediately left their nets and followed Him” (Matthew 4:20). To share Christ with others, we must first follow Him wholeheartedly. - Patience and Persistence
Fishing requires waiting, trying again, and learning from mistakes. Similarly, sharing the gospel often requires patience. Not everyone responds right away, but our faithfulness matters. Be patient and persistent with sharing the Gospel with others. - Love for People
The heart of being a fisher of men is love. Jesus Himself said, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another” (John 13:35). Without genuine care for people, our words lose power. Jesus calls us to love one another no matter the circumstances.
Examples of Being Fishers of Men Today
So how do we live out this calling in modern life? Here are some practical examples:
- Share Your Testimony
Just like the Samaritan woman who met Jesus at the well and ran to tell her town (John 4:28–30), we can share our personal stories of how Christ has changed our lives. Your testimony may be exactly what someone needs to hear. Pray for God to create divine appointments with others who need to hear your story and then obediently share. - Show Christ’s Love Through Action
Being a fisher of men isn’t only about words. It’s about demonstrating love in action. Helping a neighbor, encouraging a coworker, or serving at church are ways to reflect Christ’s love and open doors for conversations about faith. Remember, actions speak louder than words. Let your actions be rooted in love for serving others like Jesus did. - Pray for Opportunities
Prayer is powerful. Ask God to bring people into your life who need to hear the gospel. Colossians 4:3 reminds us to pray “that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ.” Also pray for God to anoint your words. Ask for His words, not yours, to share with others in order to glorify Him. - Use Your Everyday Platforms
Just as fishermen used their boats, nets, and skills, we can use what God has given us—our jobs, social media, friendships, and talents—to share His truth with others. Wherever you are, that is your mission field. Be on mission for Jesus.
Why Being a Fisher of Men Still Matters
The world is filled with people searching for hope, meaning, and peace. Jesus is the answer to those needs. When He said, “I will make you fishers of men,” He invited us into His redemptive mission to bring people from darkness into light.
As Christians, we don’t have to be preachers or theologians to live out this calling. We simply need to follow Jesus closely, love others genuinely, and be willing to share the good news whenever God gives us the chance. God does not call the equipped, He equips the called. Ask Him to equip you as you follow Him closely. You’ll be surprised at the peace you’ll feel as He equips you when you’re walking in His Will.
Final Thoughts
To be a fisher of men is to live with purpose—drawing others to the saving grace of Jesus Christ. Just as Peter and Andrew left their nets to follow Jesus, we are called to lay down our own comforts and join Him in His mission.
May we, too, hear His words today: “Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
